Reddit marketing: How to market on Reddit

I tested Reddit for a week and this is what happened!

“Marketing is telling the world you’re a rock star. Content Marketing is showing the world you are one.”

— Robert Rose

If you are a maker or someone who loves to build, ship and promote your own product, am sure you must be aware of Reddit.

Since past few weeks while scrolling on X/Twitter, I saw many makers building and shipping their products. I also found out that they also make the most out of Reddit to put their products in front of the audience on Reddit.

So I decided to try Reddit by myself.

When I started my journey of building in public on X/Twitter, my very first fun product I created was Year Elapsed. It is a website that tells how much of the current year is passed, in percentage.

I posted about Year Elapsed on Reddit and this is what happened…

And, that’s not all…

I also got some comments on the post. Some even recommended to add new features. And someone also asked me if I can build a product. I don’t know to code and my focus is social media marketing, so am giving that a miss.

My Year Elapsed website analytics data was flat before I posted on Reddit. And when I posted on Reddit, I received the traffic to Year Elapsed.

So I tried to test it more…

I made 3 sales!

On Friday, April 5 I posted this on Reddit.

And on the same day, I made 3 sales for which the leads came from this subReddit community.

Why you should market on Reddit?

Reddit has a massive audience (we're talking hundreds of millions of visits a month). But size isn't everything, so here are the other reasons you should be open to advertising on Reddit:

  • Redditors also tend to be engaged, open to learning, and tech-savvy.

  • Subreddits are super focused—and their members care a lot about the topics—which makes making targeting easier for brands. (That makes up a bit for the lack of targeting options for Reddit ads.)

  • A lot of Redditors don't use other social media apps—which means you can reach an audience you won't find anywhere else. According to Reddit's research, 23% of its users don't use Facebook, 47% don't use Instagram, and 69% don't use TikTok.

  • It's possible you'll see a significantly lower cost-per-click (CPC) on Reddit.

So that's why it's worth marketing on Reddit.

Avoid getting backfired:

  • Get to know your community. Hang out in subreddits they frequent. And take the time to read the subreddit rules (some don't allow marketing at all).

  • No matter what industry you're in, there's a subreddit dedicated to a topic in your field.

  • Reddit isn't your average social media app. Most users are anonymous and engage in groups based on interest, not location or friends. That provides businesses with more freedom to think outside the box. That can mean a few things.

  • Redditors may not like your attempts at marketing on Reddit—if they don't, you'll know.

  • When it comes to marketing on Reddit, start small. If you're totally new to the platform, create an account and start following subreddits in your industry, so you can learn where your audience hangs out.
